Question by  Venkatesh (14)

What are some examples of poetry with metonymy?

I can never understand what this means.

Metonymy refers to a person or objects character instead of the name. It is used in poetry as a figure of speech rather than to be taken literally. An example; Out Out by Robert Frost, the boy has an injured hand, but life was not literally spilling out of it.

Metonymy is a figure of speech. It can be used in poetry, but is not a poetic device and is not limited to poetry. It is like a metaphor, except the words are associated rather than a comparison. A very common example is the use of "Washington" to mean "the U.S. government."

(1)"He writes a fine hand"meaning good handwritting. (2)"The pen is mighter than sword"meaning literary power is superior than military force. (3)"The house was called to order"meaning the members in the house. (4)"We have always remained loyal to the crown"(5)"By the sweat of thy brow thou salt eat thy bread".
