Sweetgum trees tend to not to be attacked by insects and other pests, however there has been cases where yellow jackets drill into them for sap. Other known insects like Luna moths, treehoppers, forest tent caterpillars are leaf eaters. If the tree is dead or damaged it can attract bark beetles.

Tent Caterpillers can make nests and feed on the Sweet Gum Tree's leaves and often times you'll see bag worms, and web worms. The bag worm bags can be picked off the leaves of the trees. Flies, moths or beetles are leaf miners and mine themselves into the leaves of the trees.
