Vaginal mucous plug dissolves, then the pig sits squarely and makes hiccupy motions (contractions). Next she will bend over as if eating a poop and start pulling out babies. It often happens early in the morning or late at night - you may miss it. Breeding is dangerous (20% fatality), so make sure to separate males and adopt instead.

It is almost impossible to tell a guinea pig is in labor. she remains very quiet and most often you will just discover little ones in with her the next day.

Mucous plug dissolves (almost impossible to detect), sow will hunch over and make hiccupy motions (contractions), then bend over to pull the babies out. Any problems - call a vet.

If you feel her hip slightly larger than usual and her shape is like a pear than that is probably the night she will give birth do not worry if your there just let nature take its corse and if she is working with 1 than just pull it out.

She may begin to make a nest in her cage. She will lie down quite a bit and will also begin licking herself before giving birth.

Mum sits squarely, hunches up and makes hiccupping motions (contractions), then pulls out babies/cleans them. If there is bleeding or it takes too long, call an EXOTICS vet ASAP.

Guinea pigs almost never give birth during daytime hours, they prefer cooler temps and quiet. Your guinea will not move more than absolutely necessary and will not make any noises, as apposed to a usual constant chittering. DO NOT HANDLE the pups for 3 to 5 days and allow them to nurse for at least 3 weeks.

You are full of it, you can handle the babies as soon as they are born. They will not eat the babies. I am a cavy owner and one of mine has given birth. Dont give them a bath or take them out for to long!!!  add a comment

It is really hard to know. You will wake up and see new faces. You can hold the babies but you need to let them nurse too. So dont keep them out to long and dont give them a bath. You want them to smell like mama. Cavy owner.

By choice and sometimes by accident, a pregnant guinea pig comes under our care. All pregnancies are risky and breeding is never recommended.
