No, unfortunately they were not around in 1979. The Smashing Pumpkins officially formed in 1988 in Chicago, Illinois, fronted by lead vocalist Billy Corgan. However, they didn't release their first official album until 3 years later in 1991 on Virgin Records. The album was called Gish and is a hit among hardcore fans.

the Smashing pumkins started their band in 1988 not 1979. they formed their group in Illinois. they broke up in 2000 but reformed in 2006, but with a small handful of diferent players.
