Spider gears have to do with the differential on a 4x4 vehicle. There are four, all of which delegate power to the axleshafts and allows the wheels to spin at various rates, like around corners, etc. This can be a problem for off-roading, however, so you create a locker by welding the spider gears together, thus evenly distributing the power.
