Aphasia affects language whereas apraxia affects motor planning for speech. A person with apraxia can understand you but has trouble moving their mouth correctly to make speech sounds. A person with aphasia may have problems with understanding, speaking, reading and writing. You can have both at the same time.

Aphasia refers to losing the ability to speak or understand the language as a result of disease or an injury to the brain. Apraxia refers to a disorder of the nervous system and unable to perform movements as a result of an injury, but does not include sensory loss or paralysis.
