Is there a relationship between coldsores and pregnancy?

I have a friend who always gets cold sores when she is pregnant.

Yes, there is a relationship. When you are pregnant, your immune system is weaker than normal. A weak immune system can make your body more vulnerable to viruses, such as the one which causes cold sores.

Those who have already contracted the herpes virus may find that the symptoms reoccur in a more prevalent fashion with the addition of being pregnant. The fluctuation of hormones and stress may be a factor in the development of new sores.
