Take them to the vet. It is probably an extremely bad respiratory infection, DON'T WAIT! There may still be time to help your cat out since it can be a multitude of things.

It's possible, he's certainly ill and needs medical attention. You should contact your vet right away and make an appointment. If the vet isn't open or they can't see your cat you should find an emergency vet in your area. Without a proper diagnosis it is impossible to say how serious your cat's condition is.

Unfortunately, your cat may be moving onto a better place. Normally labored breathing and white(pale) gums indicate a serious condition, especially if lethargic and if there is skin tenting (pull up on the skin between shoulder blades) if the skin does not bounce right back, your pet is also dehydrated.

Get your cat to the vet's office immeadiately! It sounds like he could be severely anemic, be having a heart issue, or an allergy. Could be something caused by parasites, namely a flea infestation gone too far. Definately something that won't go away on it's own.
