Is it safe to purchase airfare tickets online?

I am concerned about the "paperless" thing.

Major websites are usually secure and encrypt personal information. You print your own documents at home. It's also cheaper since airlines charge a fee to purchase over the phone.

It is relatively safe to purchase airline tickets online. I would recommend you go to the individual airline sites themselves (United, American) or go to sites like Orbitz or Expedia. When paying for the tickets, I would use a credit card and watch subsequent statements. I would not use Craigslist or similar sites.

As long as you use a reputable website with secure payment system there is no problem. At the airport all they need is your confirmation code to print your tickets and you can print this out at home. You can also check in online and print boarding passes at home.

It is always safe to purchase online airfare tickets. When you take print out of your ticket, it has same importance as the usual ticket.
