I have had great success with travel websites. I especially like farecast (now owned by Microsoft) which not only checks a variety of travel websites and compares their prices but gives you an accurate prediction of whether the fare is on the rise or going down.

I have always found the best prices for tickets online. I have found the worst prices with brick and mortar travel agents. If you are looking for attraction tickets, often you can find excellent deals once you arrive at your destination through local ticket brokers or resellers. Do a little shopping around to find the best prices!

It depends on the nature of the trip you want to take. If this is an important trip, like your honeymoon, or a trip with a lot of different stops, then you probably should use a travel agent. If it's a simple trip, book it online by yourself.
