Is it possible to replace the overflow coolant tank if you have basic skills and basic tools?

I try to avoid spending money at the auto repair if I can.

Yes! Your coolant tank should be clearly labeled under the hood. The only tool you need is something to fill the tank with. Ideally this should be store-bought coolant, but you can use water if you are in a bind too. There is no need to take your car to the shop for this simple problem.

Yes, replacing the coolant recovery tank is a simple matter of releasing the retainers holding the old tank in place, remove the single hose connecting to the radiator, remove the old tank, then put the new tank in place, attaching the retainers and reconnecting the hose from the radiator. So special tools are needed.

It is very easy to replace the overflow coolant tank at home. The first step is to unplug the end of the hose connected to the tank. Use a clothes pin or rubberband to tie off the hose. The tank is held in place by only one or two screws.
