Typically it is safer to replace the tank rather than patch it. Tank repair should only be done by experienced professionals. Metal tanks require welding that can cause explosion if improperly done. Plastic tanks are slightly safer to repair but require an expert to repair.

I would not recommend repairing a gas tank leak. The job involves tools, safety measures and skills. Take it to a specialized shop.

There aren't many options when it comes to fuel tank repair since you can't weld or drill a used tank without the potential for an explosion. In the aftermarket there is a can of "sealant" that you can buy that will supposedly fill the leak similar to Fix-A-Flat for tires. Otherwise, it's safest to buy a new tank.

My current "work car" had a leak at the top of the tank for a while. Every time I filled it too far, it would drip. It was never a problem. Of course, it wasn't leaking directly over any hot pipes, but yours probably isn't situated that way either. Nothing to worry about, really.

If its on fuel line, replace the line. If at the sending unit replace the "O" ring. On the tank, seam it using epoxy, or you will need to weld.

If there is a hole in tank itself, or a seam in tank is leaking, you can make a temporary fix with a fuel proof two part epoxy, but in the end the tank will have to come out to be thoroughly cleaned before welding, or tank will need replacing.
