The same rules apply for both homosexual and heterosexual relationships. You should just pay attention to what kind of body language your date gives out. If he/she is obviously affection a hug would not be amiss. If your date stays in their own personal space start with the shake.

I always hug because I think a hand shake is kind of formal and seems more the type of thing to do in a professional relationship. If someone shook my hand at the end of a date I would think they didn't really like me. Depends on your preference.

Ya ought to just ask. When the date is over (if you like the person) just say "do you mind if I give you a hug? ". Here in the south hugging is very natural and actually expected. I don't believe you would be crossing any lines with a hug.
