When did the saying "gay" start meaning homeosexual?

I know that at one time when you said someone was gay you were saying they were happy.

The connection would be the camp and feminine nature of the homo sexual community. Another origin is that people were happy wth that tag and being open about their sexuality.

Gay as an adjective synonym for "happy" nowadays is used very rarely. It was very broad used from 12th century till the beginning of 20th. In 1970ties "gay" become homosexual meaning. You can say - I'm feeling very bright and gay but the people will misunderstand you.Some say that homosexual "gay" is a abbreviation from "Good As You" .

The English word gay began to be used as a term for immorality as early as 1637. It was used widely to describe homosexual people starting in the 19th century.
