Is carob the same thing as chocolate?

Although sometimes used as a substitute for chocolate, carob is not the same as chocolate. Chocolate comes from cacao beans while carob is made from the carob tree fruit.

Carob is not the same thing as chocolate. It is a type of flowering evergreen shrub or tree from the pea family called Fabaceae. Theobroma cacao, the tree chocolate comes from, is also a evergreen but is of the Sterculiaceae family.
