Alfalfa hay often has blister beetles, and the oily substance in the beetles causes damage to intestinal and urinary tract in horses. To avoid, feed only first cutting alfalfa.

Feeding your horse Alfalfa every day is not a good idea in general. It's like a candy bar for a horse. It's sweet and is hard for them to digest. Give your horse Alfalfa two or three times a week at the most.

Alfalfa has many excellent qualities, and when fed carefully in moderation, has many health benefits. Over feeding causes excessive weight gain, temperament changes, and has been associated with various serious digestive and growth issues. Going by the saying all things in moderation, fed in small controlled amounts alfalfa won't harm the urinary tract, but may well help the body overall.
