If the sum of two numbers is 2 and the product of two numbers is 3, what are the two numbers?

+5

Answer by  Sting1 (686)

x+y=2 x*y=3 x=2-y (2-y)*y=3 2y-y^2=3 y = (sqrt(2)*i)+1 x+(sqrt(2)*i)+1=2 x = 1-sqrt(2)*i The numbers are (sqrt(2) * i) + 1 and (1-sqrt(2)*i) as their sum =2 and product =3

This is a problem is a brainteaser. First x+y=2 and x*y=3. So, you have two equations and two unknowns. You can solve for x and think the two numbers are –1 and 3 but those are your numbers for x. This problem has no solution.
