If marijuana has been proven safer than alcoholic, why is alcohol legal and marijuana is not?

Alcohol is too embedded in our history and culture. It was made illegal and major problems were created in making it illegal. When marijuana was made illegal no one complained, and the government has made a great deal of money from marijuana being illegal and taxing / regulating alcohol.

The Medical field says that it should be legalized but the government says "NAY". Marijuana acts upon specific sites in the brain; smoke contains carcinogens. Liquor harmful and very addictive.
