Another way to protect your child in the pool is a life vest. A life vest is less likely to come off in the pool unless the child actually unhooks the life vest while in the water. A life vest is easy to put on and remove. It may be a little more pricey, but worth your child's safety.

Floaties are a useful tool in protecting your child in a pool. The best protection by far though is a watchful and attending parent. If you are letting your child swim, you should be by their side at all times, especially if they are just learning.
