A legion was comprised of 3000-6000 men. Generally, a legion included about 4200 foot soldiers along with 300-400 "equites," men on horseback. Often, additional troops (auxiliaries), comprised of men who were not Romans, were added to provide additional troops, skirmishers and calvary to complement the heavy artillery. Roman legions are today used as the prime ancient model for military efficiency.
