A vet will hold down the cat to prevent it from getting away or biting someone. They have special medicine they will put in the cat's mouth to deworm.

Veterinarians treat a cat of internal parasites with the same medications you can get over the counter. These treatments will not eliminate all the worms the first time the dosage is given. You or your vet will need at least a second treatment and if your cat has whip-worms it could need a dosing for over another three months.

The poor cat has to receive a shot. It is not like having fleas where a topical is applied. The shots are fairly expensive but certainly worth it and if you suspect your cat has worms you should most definitely get it checked out at your earliest convenience before the situation gets worse.

The deworming is an oral medication that works within days. You will see bits of the tapeworm leaving around the anal area of the cat or in its' feces. There are also suppository style dewormers.

The vet will do an exam of the cat's stool to verify that the cat has worms. If the cat does then they will give the cat a shot and for about a week the cat will shed the worms.

Sometimes the vet will give them a syrup kind of medicine, and then they will give a follow up dose; you can also buy de-wormer to give them yourself at home.
