How does a Ford Ranger switch defrost to vent?

On the Ford Ranger all you have to do is to move the switch completely over to get the defrost setting.

Air comes out of the defrost, and floor vents. but not the dash vents. 2004 Ford ranger 3. 0l. Even when I switch it to floor,it still comes out of the floor
