One does not "resign" from the military. You can put in for a discharge under certain conditions, but separating from the military requires far more than a good letter.

To write a good military resignation letter you have to reflect on your experiences with the particular unit or command you were with. Regardless of the circumstances behind the resignation, you need to highlight the achievements and personal relationships you had with the soldiers you commanded and more importantly apologize to the soldiers under your command for letting them down.

See your commanding officer about this one. One does not "resign" from the military. One can decline an offer if it is presented as an option, but generally one does not "resign" one's duty or assignment.

Ensure you are entitled to resign, based upon time served / rank. Emphasize respect for commander, time served, life changes. Do not provide excuses or apologies. Give contact information.

The letter should follow a discussion in which permission has been granted to make the request. The letter then should contain the information that was presented in the meeting and give a brief overview of the conversation.

You can't write a good letter of resignation to the military because you can't resign. If you try to "leave" before your contract is up then you will be court-martialed.

Always be respectful in the words you write. Thank you present command for their direction. Then tell them your heart has lead you in a new direction.
