How do you use cake stencils?

Can they be used on the SIDE of a cake?

Cake stencils are generally used like any other stencil. You put it over something and then add something forming a design. Most people sprinkle those colored sugar dots, but some bakeries use an airbrush to create the designs. It might be possible to do this on the side of a cake with the airbrush, but not likely with the sprinkles.

You use cake stencils by holding them flush with the top or side of a frosted/fondanted cake and applying confectioner's sugar, royal icing, or food coloring. They can be used on the cake sides, although it's a technique that's easiest when done with two people.
