Can I buy special cake pans shaped like a race car, or do I have to cut a baked cake into the right shapes?

My son wants a race car cake for his birthday.

They do make them but they are costly and you will only use it once. Search the web and see how you can do this by cutting the cake into shapes. Its all about how you frost the cake and the trimming that you put on the cake. It helps if you are artistic.

It is definitely possible to buy a cake pan in the shap of a race car. I would check a store like Michaels,or Zurchers, or go online to Wilton's website and check out their selection of pans. If that doesn't work, you can find a large selection of cake pans on e-bay.

You can buy specialty cake pans in a huge variety of shapes at craft shops such as Hobby Lobby, or at specialty cake stores.

You can prepare a race car cake either way. Wilton does make a car shaped cake pan that can be frosted to look like a race car. You could also decorate an oval shaped cake as a racetrack and add small toy race cars (washed well) going around the track.
