Remove wheel and tire then remove axle nut. Next remove lower ball joing castle or lock nut and separate from strut. Next with a prybar, pop axle from the transaxle.
A new axle will not cost too much and can be cost effective if you install it yourself. However it does take some mechanical ability and may require special tools.
