The noise from a bad outer cv joint is repaired by replacing the axle. Raise the vehicle by the frame or body. Remove the retainer nut for the lower ball joint. Shock the joint with a hammer to break the taper fit. Lower the lower control arm to remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Remove the axle nut.

If the axle is damaged the only smart thing to do would be to replace the whole CV shaft. Before doing that I would suggest inspecting it to see if it is rubbing on something to create the noise. If thats the case it may be a cheap, easy fix.

It depends on what kind of noise it is making. IF it is just clicking then it may just need removed and rebuild. However it it is clunking the joint may not be salvageable. This means the joint will need to bee removed and a new one installed in it's place.

Most of the time if the CV joint is making noise, the axle shaft will have to be replaced. However rebooting and joint with fresh grease may do the trick.
