You want to start by putting the cue ball in the forward center and a solid above it. Then you just alternate.

The 8-ball itself goes in the center position (3rd row, middle ball), and the ball in each corner at the bottom of the triangle must different suits (stripes versus solids).

Place the triangular rack on the billiard table. You measure the rack up at the opposite end with the white dot on the felt. The order of the balls within the rack should be random with the exception of the Eight Ball which should be placed in the middle.
