A mango is ripe when you can gently push on it with a finger and it feels soft to the touch. Also, it can emit a sweet smell, and sometimes will change colors. If you place the mango in a brown paper bag to ripen, all these things out together will tell you it is ripe.

If the mango yields under light pressure from your thumb or fingers then it is ripe. Do not rely on the color of the skin to guide you.

You can tell when a mango is ripe by (1)the smell-it has a delicious smell that comes right through the skin of the fruit, (2) if the skin is no longer green, but an orangish yellow, and (3) if the mango feels soft when you press it. The best mangoes come from India.

It should be soft. It should smell good. However, some mangoes are treated in hot water and don't ripen properly.

You know when a mango is ripe by feeling it. Press down very gently with a finger tip and if the imprint of your finger stays, then it's ripe. Some people also go by the smell, if it smells sweet, it's ripe. To soften mangoes that aren't ripe just toss them in a paper bag for a day or so.
