How do you get rid of rats without hurting them, I am vegan and do not harm any animals?

You can buy humane rat traps which imprison the rats until you take them to an area well away from any other houses and release them. Be very careful not to get bitten (and of course check these traps once a day or the animals could starve.

Remove their sources of food; check your pantry, fill all cracks in the house with steel wool to keep them out.

buy pet mice... mice and rats will not typically cohabitate the same household

There are cage traps, but the rat may chew through the cage and they wont fall for the same trick many times. Release them far away.

The best way to get rid of rats is to use a humane trap with some bait; they become stuck inside and then you can release them to the wild.
