I found an awesome remedy by accident lately. Get a bottle of red wine vinegar, and leave it open on your counter (or leave it out in a bowl). They will flock to it and commit suicide.

For a safe, natural and long term solution; you'll really have to find the colony's home source. If you do, use boiling water to pour into their home. If this isn't possible, try dryer sheets. This seems to work short term to deter them.

Clean up quickly after meals and do not leave any type of food out on the counters. Seal up cracks the ants may be entering in.
