MRSA bacteria most likely entered an open area, a cut, wound, surgical site and enters bloodstream. MRSA is a specific staph infection that does not respond to most antibiotics.Hand washing and contact precautions are very important. Drug therapy should be Vancomycin.

You have every reason to be concerned and careful, since MRSA spreads simply through surface contact (just like the flu is spread, although that's a virus). Avoid skin contact, being coughed at and touching your face. Don't share objects of utility (e.g. a phone), or sanitize them regularly. You might also want to get tested if your colleague's infection persists.

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is generally spread through contact - either with the skin of an infected person, or with items they have used, such as bedding, razors, or toothbrushes. It is most common in places like prisons and hospitals, where many people are in a confined area.

You get it just like any other type of staph infection. Basically, you have to be exposed to something that is contaminated. Generally, you must be exposed to the bacteria. This usually happens through a cut or other injury; as long as you and your co-worker don't share blood, you should be fine.
