What could be the cause of blood in the urine of a female cat?

I am not sure if she is in heat of if it is a kidney infection.

Signs of bladder inflammation and /or infection most often include bloody urine and frequent urination of small amounts, accompanied by excessive licking at the genitals. Many times an affected cat will urinate in abnormal places inside the house, bathtub or shower or begin spraying urine.

Blood in the urine could be the result of a urinary tract infection or crystals. A urinalysis will reveal either of these abnormalities. Also, a blood test can check for proper kidney function. It is important to note the volume of urine (less? more? ) and if your cat is straining.

I think that kidney infection is more likely. The main reason I say this is I don't tend to see blood when a cat is in heat very often. Take your cat to the vet, and if he tells you the cat is only in heat then you will have peace of mind.

It could have a lot of different causes. There is no way for you to tell on your own; a veterinarian will need to examine the cat and do some testing. It could be something extremely serious, such as cancer or a severe bladder or kidney infection. It could also be fairly harmless; only a veterinarian can tell.
