First off, you have to have a degree in journalism. Once you do, you can then start applying to various newspapers and magazines.

These days it is very difficult to get a paid job in journalism because commercial media has significant competition from online blogs and local media. If you want to write for a paper you might have to do it as an unpaid hobby and continue working a day job. Some papers will accept community submissions so check around.

As a current journalism student, I can tell you that the industry is tough right now, but don't give up hope. There are many routes. Some people go to journalism school, which will give you contacts and information. You could also begin freelancing articles, or try to work for a campus or local publication to get started. Good luck!
