How do you find a shiny Pokemon?

Shiny pokemon are an extremely rare (about 1 in 30,000 chance) encounter. Whenever you stumble upon a wild pokemon, it has a chance of being shiny. Basically, you just need to play pokemon for ages. Don't worry about finding a shiny, it will come when it comes. If you do find a shiny one, DON'T LET IT GET AWAY! Kudos!

A shiny pokemon can be found anywhere normal pokes can, the only difference is that they are very rare. There is only a 1 in 8144 chance that you get a shiny pokemon from the patches. Its relatively easier to find shinnies in Pokemon diamond and pearl due to chaining.
