I use "Murphy's Oil Soap" for cleaning wood. It is specially designed for sealed (not raw) wood. I use it on my floors and maple dining room set. I use the liquid version - a couple of capfuls in a bucket of warm water. It has a pleasant smell, too.

I tried a lot of cleaners on my old apartment's cabinets, and I eventually found that the best thing (and cheapest) was powdered TSP (trisodium phosphate). It's usually used to wash walls in preparation for painting. You mix about 1/4 cup with warm water, wash your surface, and rinse with water. Make sure you wear gloves and rinse well.

That sticky residue you are talking about is most likely grease that has been there for a while from cooking. I find the best way to get that of is with a spounge and warm soapy dish soap water. Dish soap is made to cut grease so it really works!

Plain soap and water can be used to clean wood surfaces. Many people choose to use a liquid soap such as Murphy's Oil Soap which is a natural soap product rather than a detergent.

The easiest and least expensive way to remove sticky residue from non-antique wood, is to mix a solution of tepid water with a few drops of liquid dish soap.
