Usually XP should detect new hardware by itself. This is valid also for a newly installed com port. If this does not work you can run a manual hardware detection from the system controls.

Open Printers and Faxes then click Server Properties, then Ports tab & then click Add Port. In the available port types list, click a port name to select it. By default, only local & standard TCP/IP ports appear in the list. To add other port types, click New Port Type, type the path to the compact disc & click OK.

You cannot simply add a com port to Windows Xp. It must come either installed on the motherboard or you can buy an expansion card that has one and plug it into your PCI or PCI-express card slot. Then, install the necessary drivers that came with the card and plug in your devices.

first open printers and faxes on the file menu click server properties. Click the ports tab and then select and click add port. You got available port types that appear by default in which are only Local Port and Standard TCP/IP Port.
