Most writers have areas of specialism in, which they know a lot about. They often read something they or someone else has written on a similar theme. They have an identified receiver for the work (a publisher, editor, magazine or website) even if there is no certainty that the work will be accepted. A sketch or outline is written first.

Many use writing prompts as starting off points. Others set aside an amount of time to write anything and everything that comes to mind and read through that writing for ideas. Books are available to teach these methods. Other people also go by the rule of 'writing what you know.'
