No. It's much more valuable to take a class in writing. The experience is richer and you'll get positive feedback, constructive and you have the opportunity to make friends, and possible contacts through your professor. Check with your community college for writing classes and give it a try, along with the free software, it'll be a double bonus.

In case of a book, which needs a professional look and feel, it is advised to use a standard writing tool. Try Latex. Easy to learn without classes.

It depends on the kind of writer that you are. Some people like taking writing classes because they appreciate the feedback from a teacher and other students in the class, whereas with software you are on your own.

that shold be very easy to use a software than attend class because of dont have time to do so. if you are good at pc than try software first.
