Title 38 of the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations is "Pensions, Benefits, and Veteran's Relief. " In this section, all the factors of disability (sight impairment, loss of a hand, back pain, etc. ) are listed. Each one has a numeric value that is used to calcuate the total disability rating.

A veteran's disability "score" is based on how long they've been disabled, the severity of their disabilities, and the time they've served their country.

The system by which ratings are assigned is complicated, complex and fuzzy, at best. Much of it is subjective, unfortunately. There are different types of disabilities, including direct, aggravated, presumptive, secondary and that which resulted from treatment. There are a variety of online sites that detail the process and the rating system.

This starts out being based on the veteran's service, but there are many criteria. There is a website, vetsfirst, that lays this all out. You can consult at the VA to have this explained to you.

It is based on the various medical issues found in the veteran's medical paperwork. Each particular ailment has a disability percentage attached to it. The best way to get an accurate rating from the veteran's administration is to make sure everything is in the medical records. For a disability rating it needs to be verified by a V. A. doctor.
