Through reading, pilots learn the lexicon and syntax that is acceptable. Later, they listen to their instructors interact with ATC. Finally, they practice what they've learned.

When pilots are going through their initial FAA courses, they must learn how to accurately communicate with ATC before and during any flight by using a flight plan. They must have a good understanding of communications and how to call in before taking off and before landing at their destination.
