Turn off the gas to the unit, and call your local gas utility company. Generally, they will relight the heater at no cost to you.

To light a heater that has cooled, you must heat up the thermocouple before the pilot will stay lit. You will need to put the dial/valve into the "light" position (this may require you to hold a button) and keep the lighter in place for a minute or so.

If it is an automatic pilot you should never try to light it yourself. However if it is an older style with a constant light then there may be an issue with the gas supply. Check to make sure the valve is turned on and the system has no leaks.

The thermocouple could be burned out. They cost less than ten dollars and only take 15 minutes to replace. I always have a spare. Buy the universal type if you also have a gas furnace.

Call your gas company or utility. They will usually light the pilot and do a courtesy check of your system at no cost or very little cost to you. If you are comfortable lighting it yourself, try blowing/vacuuming the pilot/burner area in case dust build up is the problem.

The best thing to do is to call a professional and explain to them the problem. They will know more about what could be wrong and how to fix it.

Call the local gas company or call a plumber. It is not something to experiment with it the water heater will not light. The chances of an explosion are very real and possible. Do this immediately! Do not take a chance with an open gas line. It can be extremely dangerous.
