Clear the room, then cover any door openings with plastic. Then sand the floors,a drum sander is most commonly used and there is a small sander to get the edges. Both are commonly available to be rented. After sanding, clean all dust from the floor. Apply stain with a rag or mop then two coats of polyurethane.

You will need to remove any finish that is on the floor first. Then sand the floor, using a coarse grit first and then finishing with a fine grit. Wipe the floor clean with paint thinner and let dry completely before applying varnish or polyurethane.
