PDF is a proprietary format, it means you need to buy Adobe Acrobat (not just the PDF reader) to edit PDF documents.

Well you cannot directly paste from MS works to PDFs because the PDFs are compiled documents. So you can turn a MS work document into PDF but cannot directly paste or change the PDFs. Although you can convert a PDF into MS work document. PDFs are assembled documents and compiled final versions of text format to increase security.
