A cubic yard is 1 yard wide times 1 yard long, times one yard deep. One yard equals 36 inches /3 feet. Measure all three dimensions; multiply; divide accordingly. Example: My fish tank is 4 feet x 2 feet x one foot = 8. Divide by 3 equals 2.66 cubic yards.

A square yard is determined by measuring the width and length of a space. A cubic yard uses these measurements as well as the depth of an object. For example, to determine the cubic yards in a room you need to figure the length of the room, the width of the room and the height of the ceiling.

A cubic yard is a measure of volume. If the length, width, and height are equal, each side of the object containing a cubic yard would be 1 yard long. In general, you calculate volume by multiplying the lenghtXwidthXheight.
