How do I make two different-height wood floors go together?

You aren't going to be able to get them to go together without raising the subfloor; just get a transition strip to go between them.

To make them match up you need to install a layer of wood underneath the thinner hardwood sufficient enough that the thin hardwood will reach the thicker hardwood.

You will either have to raise the lower floor or they make adapter pieces that will actually smooth out the transition from one level to another. Lowes and Home Depot have these.
