The first thing I would do is be a good listener, don't give advice. Just listen to what the friend has to say. Be real, don't be fake. Take the good times with the bad. Voice your own opinion and listen to your friends opinion. Be honest and truthful, don't sugar things to make friends.

As for any other relation, Trust and Openess are the two most important points which should be adhered to regiously to make any relation success, not just Friendship.
