One way to make a homemade weed killer is to pour borax onto the weeds. If you do not want to use this method, another way is by using plain vinager on them. Both methods should kill the weeds and possibly the roots.

For non-persistant weed, use a cleaning type vinegar, nothe cooking type, it has a higher acidic count. Try mixing half and half with water in a spray bottle. For more persistant types, replace the vinegar with bleach.

For treating paths and driveways, my father who prefers natural methods, makes up a mixture of 1 litre white vinegar, 2 heaped tablespoonfuls of table salt and a little pure soap liquid, mix until dissolved. Then spray. However, take care as the salt content makes new planting in treated soil unadvisable for a couple of years.
