Probably the first thing to learn is how the average face is proportioned. You can look this information up on the web. Once you see that the eyes tend to be lower on the head than you thought, etc... you have an idea of how to "see" your subject. Lots of practice is the key, however.

Learning to sketch a face is easy. Simplify the head and break it down into shapes. Oval for the head, triangle for the nose and so on.

You can find tutorials online that teach you how to sketch a face. You can also buy books at art stores that instruct on drawing humans.

You must practice from real life. Use either photographs or a living model to do your sketches. Living models are the best for learning anatomy, light and shadow. You can request the model move when you are not sure you are capturing the light the right way, for example.
