The best way to learn about color coordinating is to go to a home improvement store like Lowe's or Home Depot and pick up a bunch of paint color example books. These always give great tips about what colors work in what spaces and how color affects mood. Best of all, they're free!

The way I like to start a room's color coordination is to start with a favorite painting or photograph. If I like the colors in it, I copy. If it is predominately a shade of blue, follow that, for second color, follow that in its porportion, etc.

The first place to start is to determine the colors that you like the most. Your wardrobe is a good place to start since we tend to wear our favorite colors. Another good resource is home decorating magazines. Typically these magazines offer a color issue yearly.

Take a look at a color wheel. The colors across from each other are complimentary, like green/red, combined these colors create a neutral brown color.
